Sara Canals is a Washington DC correspondent for Cadena SER, Spain's leading radio station. She covers the White House and major U.S. affairs, with a particular focus on political and social issues. Canals also contributes to Mediaset, one of Spain’s largest television networks, known for its flagship news programs Telecinco and Cuatro.
Before moving to the U.S., she worked in Paris for various global and Spanish outlets, covering the 2022 French Presidential election, the Bataclan trial, Brexit’s impact on the France-UK border, and France’s pandemic response. Sara was also a regular guest on France’s public television, franceinfo, offering expert commentary on major national and international issues.
While living in Barcelona -where she was raised- Sara Canals began contributing to the BBC and CNN in the aftermath of the August 2017 terrorist attack in Las Ramblas. From that point on, and over the next three years, she reported on major events including the Catalan independence bid, the Spanish general elections, and the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Sara Canals also spent several years working in the sports industry, anchoring two major English-speaking shows: LaLiga News (Mediapro), a daily news program covering the Spanish Football League for global providers, including beIN Sports USA and Premier Sports UK; and Inside Barça (FC Barcelona), a weekly show streamed on Verizon in the U.S., providing the latest on the club’s first team.
In 2016, she directed and produced Transcending Boundaries, which centers around La Amistad, the largest protected area in Central America. Located on the mountainous border of Panama and Costa Rica, the film explores the complex challenge of balancing biodiversity conservation with the needs of three underserved indigenous communities. The documentary was officially selected for the Environmental Film Festival in Washington, D.C.
